The Tipping Point

As a communication design student I have been learning more about how to communicate with an audience than how to make really slick designs. At PNCA the curriculum focuses more on the Ideas and how to best address the problem than how to make a super slick whatever. That being said This term I have the opportunity to take a Marketing and Branding class. I don’t think I will create a single piece of art in the class but I do believe that it will be very important to my education. We are reading The Tipping Point by Malcom Gladwell.

The Tipping PointI just read the first chapter and think I really like it. The idea of the book is to help explain the idea that a large change can happen very quickly and from something very small. The first example Gladwell uses is the Hush Puppies craze of the mid Nineties. A small handfull of Kids began wearing the shoes and then out of nowhere they exploded and were being used by high fashion designers in their runway shows. I think that designers need to know about the ideas within this book to successfully engage their audience on a more meaningful level. There will be more to come concerning this…
